Private jet categories and what an hour of each costs

The hourly rate is the biggest line on a charter price, and it follows the size of the aircraft. Here is what each category seats, how far it flies and what it typically costs per hour in the US market.

Large-cabin Gulfstream on the ramp under a blue sky
Glass cockpit of a single-engine turboprop

Turboprop

$1,800–3,200 per hour, estimated

Short regional hops, island and mountain strips, and the lowest hourly cost. Slower than a jet, so best under about two hours.

Pilatus PC-12, King Air 350

Small business jet facing the camera on the apron at dusk

Very light jet

$2,800–4,200 per hour, estimated

Choosing well

Pick by trip, not by prestige

Start with the longest leg. If the flight is under two hours, a turboprop or light jet usually does the job at the lowest hourly rate. Between three and five hours, a midsize or super-midsize jet buys a stand-up cabin and enough range to fly nonstop. Beyond that, you are into large-cabin territory.

Count bags as well as people. Seat counts are the maximum. Skis, golf clubs and large suitcases fill a light jet’s hold quickly, and weight limits can cut how far it flies with every seat taken.

Check the airports. High-elevation and short-runway airports, Aspen for example, limit which aircraft can operate and how much they can carry on a hot or icy day. Some airports restrict aircraft size or operating hours.

Then compare total price, not hourly rate. A faster jet with a higher rate can cost about the same over a long leg, and a nearby aircraft with little positioning can beat a cheaper one based far away. Our quotes show each line so the comparison is fair.
